"Good morning Mervin V. You have 3 new messages InBox and 5 new messages in your E-mail...." 
          Starting August,  this becomes a familiar hint from the computer terminal as San Pedro College of Business Administration (SPCBA) goes on line in the world's largest computer networks - the Internet. 
          A Makati-based Internet Service provider (ISP), net Asia and  the Computer Department's in-house techinical staff, are tasked with the installation of 20 "dial-up" lines from PT&T and Pentium II workstations. Each workstation is pre-installed with Internet browser software for Windows environment. This set-up is designed to cater students' access in the Internet from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. , Mondays to Saturdays. 
          The students, pre-scheduled in a one-hour per week session, are provided with their own Eletronic Mail (E-mail) addresses and othe Internet sevices.These include accessing new sofware and data wiht File Transfer Protocol (FTP), exchangeing thoughts with friends through Internet Relay Chat(IRC) and getting information on any subject in the World Wide Web (www). All these and more are provided in set-up with easier connections and faster response. 
          The SPCBA Internet is part of the on-going improvement plans of the Administration Rcognizing the academic trend in employing technology. SPCBA  futher advances by becoming  the first tertiary-level academic institution in San Pedro, laguna to connect in cyberspace. Still, there are plans for the offices, whose systems are connected to the SPCBA Local Area Network (LAN), to link to the Internet.

Computer Department and JPCS at Windows  98 Launching

           A break through in the operating systems and environment was unveiled in the launching of  "Works Better, Plays Better"- Windows 98 last July 10-12 at the SM Megatrade Hall  in Mandaluyong City. Sponsored by the Philippine Systems and Synergy Inc. (PSSI) in cooperation wiht Microsoft Philippines, the occasion gathered together computer enthusiasts, professional or hobbyists alike from theIT industry and the academe.
          Prof, manolito Montealto and Prof. Ray Veloz of the Computer Department led the pack of representatives from SPCBA  to witness the event introdicing the latest successor of Windows 95 . "They were joined by the members of Junior Philippine Computer Society (JPCS-SPCBA Chapter) headed by its President, Ms. Antonina Cuevas.
          The Megatrade Hall, which housed the exhibit area was filled wiht almost one hundred personal computers running under Windows 98 connected ot the internet. It featured how the new operating system "works and plays betteer" interms of performance and reliability, ease of use , Internet integration and entertainment capabilities.
          Several promotional items were given away, from newsletters and magazines to stickers and souvenirs. Also, videos featuring Windows 98 were shown through stand-alone terminals.
